How to use Keogramist

Selecting a keogram will open a AuroraDome, a virtual first-person viewer, where you can look around and watch that night's aurora. Learn more about keograms and AuroraDome here.

Below each keogram is coloured bar showing the Kp-index - a measure of geomagnetic activity throughout the night, updated every 3 hours. Higher Kp means greater chance of seeing the aurora.

Explore aurora using keograms

Over 1000 night of aurora activity are featured here as "Keograms", each a visualization of the sky overhead from sunset to sunrise. A keogram helps you find nights of strong aurora activity. Here are some examples:

These keograms are generated from publicly available timelapse video from the AuroraMAX all-sky camera, run by the Auroral Imaging Group at the University of Calgary, Astronomy North, and the City of Yellowknife for and in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency.

Open Kp Index archive data is from the Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

For clarity, the colour saturation of the keograms has been boosted relative to the original video source.
